June Link Luv

I present… this month’s time sink link luv.
Good article, well written, please read.
My Myers Briggs test result is really consistent over many years. I’ve had to take it over the years “officially” for various school and work reasons. So, I as confident as you can be when it comes to the “put you into a box” type tests. That being said….I didn’t feel like this article actually aligned “my personal hell” very well. Some of the other hells associated with other types look much much worse to me!
I’m always horribly behind the times so don’t laugh if this is “so yesterday” and you guys saw this site a long time ago. Really adorable horse cartoons.
Have to say I disagree with the conclusions of this article that’s been making the rounds on facebook. I think total weight of the horse combined with weight of rider is more important then the weight of the rider in isolation. We’ve talked about this on the blog before, but due to allometric scaling effects, smaller horses often has a lot more “left over bone” capable of carrying more weight then larger horses. I think that a simple weight percentage rule of thumb probably does more harm then good, especially when such information might be used to guide decisions for horse welfare.
mmm….now I’m losing tract of which links got posted last month already! Ah well. Worth a re-read if you skipped over it last month.
Happiness research is only slightly less interesting then exercise physiology to me. Probably because I consider myself a generally happy person – which I feel is a choice rather then a circumstance. However, because I’m surrounded by so many unhappy people, being happy often feels like a delicious dessert – one to be savored and grateful for. I read these types of posts as much for an explanation of what I”m doing right, as for ideas of what else I could be doing.
Way too funny not to share. And yeah. Try not to be that person that is sucked into the vortex of someone else’s stupidity.
I know when people say everything happens for a reason they mean it to be comforting and the are doing their best to say something in a circumstance that demands that something be said, but there is no right thing. But please…..just don’t. There seems to be a misconception that just because someone is Christian and has a relationship with God that hand in hand with that belief is that “everything happens for a reason”. That simply isn’t true. I do NOT go through life blindly believing that everything happens for a reason and that the “best” circumstance comes true out of whatever tradegy/set back occurred. Life isn’t fair, and it sucks sometimes and that fact doesn’t make it any “less”. And yes, this doesn’t negate having God in your life.
I don’t watch horse racing because there is something about the power and the grace and the rawness of it that makes me cry. Big crocodile tears streaming down my cheeks. Oh and before someone accuses me of going on pregnancy hormone soft, horse racing has affected me like this since I was old enough to know what horse racing was. Yeah, I know that it’s people like me that horse racing continues even as critics just as passionately point to the babies breaking but I can’t help it. The link below isn’t a video of the third leg of the triple crown, figured my readers were good enough to google that all on their own….it’s a split screen of American Pharoah and Secretariat running the third leg of the triple crown at the “same time”. The commentary and the video is to highlight how secretariat would have beat the pants off of AP….but here’s the thing. That isn’t horse racing. For the same reason that the best or fastest horse doesn’t always win the endurance ride. The importance of competition is showing up at a particular time and executing your best ability at that moment. (Btw this is why I think dressage is one of the most difficult things I’ve ever tried. You have to be in the ring at a specific predetermined time, to ride a test that is composed of executing a series of movements at a exact time and place. And you have just a couple of minutes to perform). To compare two performances across time, even on the same track and race isn’t fair. Wanna know what I saw when I saw this video? I saw a horse that moves remarkably like Secratariat and stood out in their respective fields in a way that made it clear they deserved to be out there in front.
These are too cute. And perhaps even doable. Baby shower as an excuse?
I hate sloppy footing in endurance rides and in runs. Makes me work really hard and it’s really hard not to pull something funny. Makes me really appreciate what my horse is having to work through. Thus I can’t imagine doing a race in this footing.
In my experience, this totally rings true. What do you think?
This list sums up nicely the words I need to hear but didn’t know I needed them. How many people around me need to hear these words and how can I make that happen?
Not horse related, but I couldn’t resist.
I think a lot about growing old in the endurance sports and helping my horses grow old (and sound) in it too. I found this article interesting.
HOW did this guy stay on the horse???????
Oh yeah…totally. And if you haven’t seen this happening in equine endurance, you just aren’t wasting as much time on facebook as I am.
I’d rather do a race featuring pizza then either beer or donuts. 🙂
This is only related in that endurance has LOTS of women in it. But I’m posting it anyways because I’m TIRED of hearing comments like this and agree with this blog. Sure, it’s stupid small talk that you make with strangers or people you don’t know what to talk to about, but can we please stop it? Go back to making stupid comments about the weather or something and not something that reinforces damaging sterotypes that don’t help anyone.
This is from a runner’s blog and I was highly amused.
If I was actually eloquent and sh*t I might have written something like this about finishing up my clinical year in vet school.
Oh good! A how to manual on getting free stuff. Let’s see. Ummm….no…not me…not me ever…ummm…ok. I’ve got loyalty. That’s about it. Ah well. Not likely to get any corporate sponsorships soon I guess!
How is it that I’m HOURS into writing this post and STILL haven’t gotten through all my links????? The little squirrel brain is kicking in! Time to do something different.
A couple of these links didn’t work, and they happened to be the ones I was the most curious about. :/ Booo!
I love The Blogess too. 🙂
I’m checking it out now. Thanks for letting me know
Issue should be fixed. Only affecting 3 links in the post – there was a space in the hyperlink prior to the URL. I removed that and the links should be working now. If a specific one still isn’t working let me know!
All working! Thank you Mel! And thank you for your monthly Link Luv posts: I always enjoy them!
Gotta agree on the personal hell one. I love working that way. (ISTJ every time).
ISTJ here too (but I think you knew that). Are most engineers ISTJ’s the way vets are?
The modern ultra-runner secrets…SO true…especially in the facebook endurance world. That was good for several laughs.
