IRL Feb 2015

You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s already another month? Seriously. That’s just insane. I feel like I haven’t even experienced the month of February, much less had the time to do anything in the month of February.
Let’s see how things shook out.
MerryLegs
The easy one.
a. She got into a trailer
b. She went to the trainers.
ummm…that’s about it.
Farley
2 rides. 1 short and 1 long.
The short ride was a rather vigorous trotting bareback ride in the dark.
The long one was a 16.5 mile trail ride up in Oroville (you know, the one wrote about here where I discussed Farley’s distinct lack of interest in conditioning rides).
I turned her out a lot. I trimmed her feet. And when I get back into town after this 2 week externship I’m really looking forward to putting some more rides on her now that it’s just her and me for a while :). I’m sure she will be thrilled.
I need to get her out 1-2x more long rides (one of which needs to be ~20 miles) between now and mid April, and start doing some more regular shorter riding during the week and then I think we will be set for our fifty in early May. We are on track for our long rides, so now it’s just a matter of getting in the mid-week shorter rides for pure saddle time.
As a reminder….50 miler planned in early May…or if that one isn’t able to get done (or I’m not able to get the riding in between now and then), mid-June when I’m out of clinics.
Rider Fit
4 easy runs (I had planned on a long run last Saturday, but it turned into an easy run when less than half way through it I got a call from the clinic and had to come in for an emergency. )
1 interval run (mile repeats – hardest run I’ve done in a really long time)
1 long trail run (~14 miles)
Total mileage: 36.13 miles, 10.15 average pace.
Quite pleased with the running.
However, we need to talk about strength training. Or rather my lack of it. I really really REALLY need to start taking it seriously and DOING IT. I just don’t know how to make it happen. Everytime I try to add in weight or strength training it completely derails everything. I completely lose all motivation for ALL exercise. I WILL figure this out. Right now my priorities are – #1: long run, #2: interval run, #3: short easy runs. Surely I could put in a strength training session as a #3 priority and not derail everything?
Speaking of running….Last Saturday I went to the Coastal Runs award luncheon and picked up my Blazer Award! My quest for a Blazer award resulted in a second place in my age division in the marathon category. Woot Woot!
It was hands down one of the best awards functions I’ve been to. All you can eat pizza and an open bar. I had brought a $20 bill expecting there to be some sort of “fee” or something but there were no catches – just come and join the fun if you ran a coastal event, volunteered, or are a “friend” of coastal trail run. The organizers seemed genuinely thrilled that we were all there, urging us to eat and drink more, and drawing LOTS of raffle ticket winners for the free raffle tickets they handed out in the beginning. They tried not to call out names of the blazer winners that weren’t there, and did a different division every 15 minutes or so over about 1 1/2 hours which made the whole thing very enjoyable and NOT tedious at all. Was it a huge party to thank and celebrate the runners over the past year, or was it a marketing tool to get me excited about running more of their events this year? The usually bitter and cynical part of me doesn’t particularly care and I can’t wait to continue to support this running company through running and volunteering because I felt valued and part of something.
In fact, when I got back into Davis post-luncheon I couldn’t wait to go on a run.
Unfortunately it was cut short when I got called in for an emergency, but 4.5 miles was better than nothing! (and look at that smile on my face as I show off my t-shirt blazer award swag!).
No running goals beyond just getting out there. No upcoming events planned. Still would like to get a 5K in, but doing anything beyond a long run per week and an easy run or two has proven to be difficult, so not doing the 5k specific workouts that I had planned. Would love to do a trail marathon in the next month or so, and then continue to look for local 5k opportunities.
PS
March is the month of Birthdays…so before I forget….
Happy birthday to MerryLegs (2/28)…and Tess (3/10)…and my husband (3/17)…and Farley (ummmm 3/24 or something like that?)
I feel so out of shape reading this, but the fun you’re obviously having is great motivation to just do what I can and move up from there! Thanks for sharing your adventures.
It really is about just doing what you can every day and letting it shake out in the end. Looking back I’m sucked I didn’t ride more….but it makes me even more grateful that I cancelled my 50k in order to get that long ride in. In a lot of ways looking back on what I accomolish each month knowing I did my best to run and ride consistently instead of making plans and measuring how I came up short (ie run three times a week….and then lamenting the fact I didnt) is much more motivating.
But will we see you (and your awesome swag) at AERC in Reno?!
No :(. In a stroke of epically bad timing I have a Tulare rotation for two weeks which started today which puts even a Saturday appearance so far away it may as well be on the moon :(.
