I have no wish to run this race ever, but I might want to crew it so I nominate one of my lucky readers to go and qualify and train and get into Badwater. Deal?
Pretty sure given enough time we could come up with a similar and hilarious list of bizarre ways we have treated injuries. And if you think about it, there are some really bizarre way that we try to treat horse injuries that people swear up and down actually works. So, what’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to an injury?
I’ve integrated a lot of fasted runs into my routine the last couple of years and I think it does help me both learn to fuel more efficiently AND, even more importantly helps remind me what a “bonk” feels like and how to fix it (eat!!!!). I know it sounds stupid but often on a long run I’m grumpy and going bonk and it doesn’t occur to me to eat. Fasted runs help me realize when I’m in a bonk faster because it raises my awareness.
Barely any horse or running content, but this marathon person was on the bachelorette and I thought his comments on what goes on with the editing of the show and behind the scenes was DARN funny.
Good post and thoughts from the Angry Jogger on running and alcohol.
I have to agree with Eric on this one when it comes to the horse events. I don’t watch horse events at the olympics and don’t really care. WEGs is a much bigger deal IMO when it comes to the horse world.
It’s a stretch to apply this article to horses but I think there’s some good things to think about. You guys have already heard my opinion that slower isn’t always better for the horses when it comes to endurance rides – time in the saddle matters. I think the “right” speed also depends on a horse’s biomechanics.
NER – if you are interested in the topic of regulatory vetmed and specifically some of the new antimicrobial directives that are coming down that affect food animal stuff, this post written by this blogger nails it really nicely. Couldn’t help including it here.
I’m a huge believer in a neck strap. Do you ride with one? I have a grab strap hooked on most of my saddles (and it makes a very useful strap for fixing broken or missing tack in a pinch because it’s a sturdy strap with 2 buckles on either end) and keep a few stirrups leathers around in case I’m working on something where I can use it as a tool. If you resist ever holding on because you think it makes you look like a wimp, then I think you are missing out on a great tool that can really improve your hands and position.
Yes. This. I find myself going back to the basics more and more when it comes to horses and medicine.
I appreciate the sentiment of this post, The Trailer Isn’t the Problem. I don’t agree with everything she says, but it’s worth a read. When I got her Farley was a bit of a problem loader. As with everything with that mare, she never really screwed up, just enough that you could categorize her as “resistant”. She has a bit of a passive aggressive streak. It was nothing major – just a hesitation, maybe needing to be led up several times, maybe a tap on the hind end to push her forward. Not every time. Just sometimes. I was consistent and patient and figured that the behavior would extinguish itself eventually with consistent handling. Uh huh. The last time she refused to load and wanted me to play the game was memorably after we got pulled at Foresthill in 2009 at Tevis. I was tired, she was tired. There’s my trailer ready to take us home to the fair grounds. And the b*tch stopped and refused. I was so not in the mood. I swung around at her and moved her aggressively backwards while yelling “WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO THIS”. Maybe 3 seconds tops. Then I took a deep breath and marched up to the trailer and she didn’t even blink an eyelash as she stepped up. I’ve never had another issue. So yeah, sometimes it’s not about the trailer, but sometimes a little discipline applied appropriately and properly goes a long ways and can really effective.
This is one of my favorite Mugwumps post and I feel like I HAVE to have shared it already…but there it is in my list of links so maybe I haven’t? So just in case……
California wall trail map. I wants one!!!!!
Short month! I guess a look at the mileage of my IRL post for last month might provide some insight why ;).
Having purchased a different trailer in order to solve a trailering issue, I can say that sometimes it really is the trailer.
