SF 50 Ultra Comic

I did it! I ran a not-so-easy fifty mile ultramarathon and finished!
Fortunately for *me* ( and rather unfortunately for the blog…) I had a good running day that happen to coincide with race day.
I find in these longer races that unless things went very very wrong, nobody cares about a play by play narrative. I’m even bored and exhausted just thinking about writing up 50 miles and 13 hours worth of running.
Coordinating good running days with race days doesn’t always happen. Sometimes, you are rewarded with carefully preparation with….misery, pain, and at a complete loss of how to make sure it doesn’t happen at your next race. The Mt. Diablo 50k was such a race….Almost every step from the very beginning was a struggle, even though theoretically I had done everything *right*.
Last Saturday played out really differently….I ran a smart race mentally and physically, nothing hurts pathologically, and I ran strong right up to the end.
So, we will push aside the mind numbing details of 50 miles of trail, share *pretty pictures in this post and answer imaginary burning questions in the next post (and if you have a *real* burning question, feel free to leave it in the comments and I’ll include it!).
*I took very few pictures choosing to enjoy the race in a different way, so really don’t have enough pictures to really tell a story. Thought you might enjoy a bit of eye candy anyways. Many thanks to Funder for crewing and taking most of the pics here!
Update (Oct 2014): Was just sent a picture from the race that might be my favorite picture! Too late to incorporate into the comic but never too late to share.
Congrats Mel! You earned such a great run. Great job out there!
Wow. You ran for longer time than I’ve ever ridden my horse. And up those gnarly hills! Amazing.
The roast pig analogy is great.
Congratulations, again!
Way to go Mel.. your a rockstar.. that is an unbelievably long way.. and I am with Irish horse.. you ran on your legs farther than I have ever ridden my horse.. sad… but inspiring..
I have a friend who runs Ultramarathons… 100 milers..maybe that is next for you!
I do want to run a 100 miler….but I have to admit that I just can’t fathom how my legs can continue to move that long?
[…] what I originally thought would be my first fifty mile run on Oct 11, and based on how I felt at SF50 last weekend, I think it would be ideal to have a marathon or 50k race 3-4 weeks prior. […]
[…] The events that I have dealt with the suffering and succeeded in spite of them were and remain very empowering (Tevis 2010, San Fransisco 50 mile ultra). […]
